Our Story

In November 2017  St. Johns AME in Raleigh, NC set out to fund a recovery effort to help Puerto Rico rebuild after Hurricane Maria devastated the island and its economy. They donated the funds to Cinnamon Ruth Leggett singer/songwriter now located in Los Angeles, CA to distribute in Puerto Rico. Self funding her trip Cinnamon assessed the needs of the people and distributed the funds to those identified. Later organizing a movement called Worship Puerto Rico, the recovery efforts continued. Now, going into its fifth year, Worship Puerto Rico is focussed on preparedness and distribution of emergency bags called “Salva Mochilas”.  While seizing opportunities to provide helpful education that will help Puerto Ricans survive natural disasters, WPR is building hope through service and “love in action”, stated Christina Shivers, 2021 WPR team member. Every March a team of 12-14 volunteers return to Puerto Rico to continue community efforts distributing the life saving bags, provide health screenings, and resilence training.
